Forest Park was initially chartered in 1908, after the city became a stop along the Macon and Western Railroad. Prior to that date, most of the region’s settlers consisted of farm families. As a railroad stop, Forest Park was nicknamed “Stump Town,” as trees were chopped down in the area to provide fuel for the trains. As the railroad began its descent into obscurity, Forest Park felt the undeniable effects. It wasn’t until the 1950’s and 1960’s that Forest Park would once again experience a period of great prosperity and development.

The establishment of Fort Gillem in the 1940’s marked one of the milestones in this initial redevelopment phase. For more than half a century, the military installation served as a major employer in the region, and Forest Park officially annexed the base in 1973. The fort would later be closed in consolidation efforts by the U.S. Military. Today, the land forms part of an aggressive redevelopment initiative, which aims to draw new manufacturers to the region and help bolster Forest Park’s economic activity.
