Jonesboro is a small town of around 5,000 people that is notable for its role in the end of the American Civil War. Originally called “Leaksville,” this community was incorporated in 1823. Jonesboro would later go on to become a railroad town in 1846, with the arrival of the Macon and Western Railroad. It was this event that led to the town’s rechristening after a railroad official, Samuel G. Jones. Since its heyday as an important railroad stop, the town has evolved into a popular destination for families and commuters who work in downtown Atlanta.
The Battle of Jonesborough, as the name was once spelled, occurred over a two day period in the autumn of 1864 in this region. It was this battle that led to the fall of Atlanta, which caused serious damage to the campaign of the Confederate Army. Thanks to this victory, President Lincoln was able to secure reelection, and the Confederacy ultimately surrendered several months later. This battle history has long defined the community of Jonesboro and lent the town fame outside of North Georgia.
Jonesboro is home to two city parks, Battleground Park and Massengale Park. These recreational areas give residents the opportunity to enjoy the community’s natural beauty. Jonesboro’s Stately Oaks Plantation is a popular attraction that consists of a preserved plantation home from 1839. The town is also home to the Clayton County International Park, which includes a water park, a fitness center, and hiking trails. Fans of the classic novel and film, “Gone with the Wind,” can also partake in the associated tour, which includes many sites in Jonesboro and Clayton County, where the story took place.
Many of the modern Jonesboro’s residences feature the antebellum charm that makes this region so unique. Large estate homes with sprawling yards and quaint bungalows are just a few of the many private residence options in Jonesboro. The town is also home to a few apartment complexes.
